We often talk about certain types of consumption that are negative – from coal, to junk food, to disposable cups, to plastic water bottles – or plastic anything for that matter! But what is good consumption, and how do we accentuate it?

A cultural economy is where production and consumption involves the processing of ideas, symbols, and emotional experiences rather than the dissipation of energy and the breakdown of matter. The consumption of of creative and cultural activities, amenities and artifacts is therefore more sustainable than the consumption of purely material goods. Read more –›

There are three categories of consumption: fundamental, instrumental and terminal. Fundamental consumption is the basics everyone needs for survival. Instrumental consumption contributes to our mental well-being as active agents in life. Terminal is consumption for its own sake, and is therefore wasteful and harmful. Read more –›

Social consumption not only helps you save energy, but it can also increase your happiness. Studies show that people have more positive emotion when they are actively engaged in social, cultural and creative experiences. Using a service is usually better than buying products. An obvious example is renting something instead of buying it. This is particularly true if you are only going to use the item rarely.
