There are two fundamental strategies for dealing with household and office waste:
  1. Don’t make so much waste in the first place
  2. Dispose of waste in a safe and responsible manner

Waste management

Reduce

The most effective way to manage waste is NOT to create so much in the first place. Reducing waste is the attitude to not buy things you don’t need, or are likely to throw out. Many things are designed to be disposable but these are choices we can say no too – and feel good doing it.

Reuse

Do you really need to buy something to use only once or twice? No, you can you borrow it from a friend or neighbour. If you already have it, and you don’t use it, then lend it out, give it away or, if you are not that generous, you could flog it off to someone who needs it.

Recycle waste

70% of what we throw out can be recycled – for free! That is a lot better than paying for the local council to put it in a hole in the ground. You can recycle more than you think. Even kitchen scraps and organic waste can be composted.

Disposal options

All waste that can’t be recycled must be disposed of responsibly. Hazardous waste MUST be treated. Non-hazardous waste should also only be disposed of at approved landfills, transfer stations or in council rubbish bins and bags.
